CUPE says workers at Independence Plus Group Homes have voted in favour of strike action Monday night.

A release states Local 3497 members, representing Residential Care Workers (RWC), voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action.

"Over 82% of members voted for a strike because we need better working conditions," said Rose Galbraith, a RCW and President of CUPE Local 3497.

The union says workers provide assisted living services, nutrition and cleaning services for adults with intellectual and/or physical disabilities.

Galbraith added, ""It's not an easy job, the salaries are low ($15/hr) and almost all of colleagues are working two jobs to make ends meet."

Bargaining has been ongoing since May 2018, but CUPE says Management still refuses to bargain improved wages and working conditions.
