Police say three women from the Lameque area are dead after a minivan collided with a tractor trailer in Bathurst on Wednesday night.

RCMP Sgt. Marc Tremblay says the crash happened on Highway 11 near the King Ave. exit  when the driver of the van made a U-turn and collided with the tractor trailer at around 7:30pm Wednesday night.

The victims, aged 64, 75, and 88 were all passengers in the van and died at the scene.

The driver, a 79-year-old woman and a 72-year-old female passenger were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the tractor trailer wasn't injured.

The section of highway was closed for several hours while traffic was diverted.

It reopened early Thursday morning.
