Missing person identified as deceased man located on Hwy.15 near Smiths Falls

The Lanark County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) says they are still investigating after the body of a missing man was found adjacent to Highway 15 near Smiths Falls.

A recent release from OPP says police were able to identify the deceased as 34-year-old Steven Tate from Montague Township. The man was reported missing on November 4th, 2023. Police say he was last seen alive on the same date in the early morning hours. 

Police explain that the body was located on November 8th, 2023 by OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT) members. Highway 15 was closed for a period of time while Technical Collision Investigators and a Collision Reconstructionist assisted with the investigation.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death is also ongoing, under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner and Ontario Forensic Pathology Service. 

OPP says they believe there is no threat to the public. 

Anyone with recent contact with Steven Tate, or have any information, contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or call Lanark County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) if you wish to remain anonymous. Investigators also say they want to hear from anyone with potentially relevant doorbell, dashcam or other video recordings from the days leading up to Steven's disappearance.
