Camila Cabello was the big winner at Sunday’s MTV Europe Music Awards – but a pair of Canadian artists also fared well.
Shawn Mendes was named the winner in the Best Live category and Alessia Cara won Best World Stage for her MTV Spotlight at Hyperplay performance in Singapore.
The night belonged to Cabello, though, who picked up Best Artist, Best Video and Best Song (for “Havana”) and Best U.S. Act.
“I know what it's like to be a fan," Cabello said. “I remember when I was 14 years old, watching these shows, waiting for my favourite artists to come on.
“I know how special that bond is between a fan and their favourite artist and I know special the bond I have with is with my fans.”
Nicki Minaj, who performed during the show in Spain, won Best Look and Best Hip-Hop. Cardi B was named the winner of the Best New Artist category.
In the genre categories, Dua Lipa – who’s coming to the iHeartRadio Canada Jingle Ball next month – won for Pop while 5 Seconds of Summer won Rock; Panic! At The Disco won Alternative; and Marshmello won Best Electronic.
Not surprisingly, BTS won Biggest Fans.
The MTV EMAs paid tribute to Janet Jackson, who performed a medley of “Made For Now,” “All for You” and “Rhythm Nation.”
The pop icon said she wanted to use her acceptance speech to speak for women whose voices have been “stifled.”
Jackson said: “I am one of those women. Women who have been gagged, both literally and emotionally. Women who have been abused. Women who have been intimidated. Women who have lived in fear.
“I stand with you. You are my sisters.”
Other performers during the show included Bebe Rexha, Little Mix, Jason DeRulo, Marshmello, and Halsey.
