Demi Lovato got a reminder Sunday that social media can be a nasty, hateful place.
The pop star deleted her Twitter account after referencing rapper 21 Savage’s arrest by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“So far 21 savage memes have been my favorite part of the Super Bowl,” Lovato tweeted, sparking accusations that she was making light of his predicament.
ICE accuses Savage – whose real name is Sha Yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph – of coming from the UK and overstaying his visa by more than a decade.
Feeling the heat, Lovato tweeted that she was not laughing at “the fact anyone is getting deported.”
The vitriol from others on social media included numerous cheap shots related to Lovato’s overdose last year.
“If you’re gonna come at me for making a joke, try coming at me with something original not involving drugs,” she wrote. Then, minutes later: “F**k Twitter. This is why I don’t tweet anymore.”
Later, Lovato took to Instagram to explain and apologize.
“Wasn’t laughing at anyone getting deported. Sorry if I offended anyone. But it’s no excuse to laugh at someone’s addiction let along their OD,” she wrote.
“I was laughing at who the f**k knew 21 was British? Literally no one. That’s it. It doesn’t go deeper than that. I’m sorry if I upset people truly.”
