Drake Dominates American Music Awards Nominations; 4 Other Canadians Earn Noms

Canadian rapper Drake broke a 32-year record on Monday by scoring the most American Music Awards (AMAs) nominations.

The Toronto native is up for 13 AMAs, topping Michael Jackson’s record of 11 in 1984.

Drake’s list of nominations include major categories like Artist of the Year, Male Artist, Album, Rap Artist and Rap Song.

He has never won an AMA.

Canadians Justin Bieber and The Weeknd earned five and three nominations respectively.

In fact, there is a 100 per cent chance that the winner of the AMA for Male Artist will be Canadian. The three nominees are Drake, Bieber and The Weeknd.

New Artist of the Year nominees include Canada’s Alessia Cara and Shawn Mendes.

Both The Weeknd and Cara -- as well as multiple-AMAs nominees The Chainsmokers -- will perform at the iHeartRadio Canada Jingle Ball five days after the AMAs.

Rihanna is the female artist with the most AMAs nominations this year. Her seven nods include one for her made-in-Toronto video for “Work.”

The American Music Awards will be handed out on Nov. 20.
