Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes Tweet About U.S. Border Detentions

Canadian singers Justin Bieber and Shawn Mendes weighed in on U.S. politics over the weekend.

Shortly after U.S. president Donald Trump tweeted that he was trying to get rapper A$AP Rocky released from detention in Sweden, Bieber replied: “I want my friend out.. I appreciate you trying to help him. But while your (sic) at it @realDonaldTrump can you also let those kids out of cages?”

Bieber is referring to children who were brought over the southern border illegally and are being kept in overcrowded facilities.

The pop star, who has 106 million followers, got more than 950,000 “likes” for his tweet – and a lot of heat. Replies included “Go back to Canada” and “You aren’t exactly an ‘exemplary’ immigrant nor the kind we want in our system.”

Mendes also tweeted on Saturday: “Keep families together.. Please support organizations like @supportKIND, that are working to #protectfamilies imprisoned at the border.” He included a link to make donations.

Reactions to his tweet were generally more positive, with many people thanking him for using his platform.
