System of a Down frontman Serj Tankian tweeted Saturday that seeing guests at a Nigerian wedding party dancing to the band’s 2001 track “Toxicity” is “simply awesome.”
Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine also retweeted the video and commented: “There’s hope!!”
The 22-second video showing dozens of well-dressed revellers rocking out to the song was posted on Twitter in August 2017 but was given new life when UK radio and TV host Will Njobvu shared it last Friday.
“I’m glad this post has sparked a discussion about Black people and the music that society expects us to listen to,” he wrote in a follow-up tweet. “We are multifaceted. I’ve been listening to rock since school & was always told ‘you’re not black’ because of it. I love pop music, hip-hop & afrobeats just as much.”
