“Señorita,” the No. 1 song in the U.S. this week, was named Best Collaboration at the MTV Video Music Awards on Monday night.
Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello performed the song earlier in the show, which was broadcast from New Jersey. There was no on-screen kiss although the couple came close.
Taylor Swift’s “You Need To Calm Down” picked up Video of the Year and Video For Good. (In one of the show's many cringe-worthy moments, presenter John Travolta attempted to hand the trophy to drag queen Jade Jolie, whom he mistook for Swift.)
Todrick Hall, who was co-executive producer of the "You Need To Calm Down" video, shared an important message. "If you’re a young child that’s out there watching this show who is different, who feels misunderstood, we’ve never needed you more than now to share your art, share your stories, share your truth with the world," he said, "no matter what you identify as, who you identify as, who you love, this is such a beautiful place."
The awards for Best New Artist and Push Artist went to Billie Eilish, who did not attend the show.
The Jonas Brothers, whose VMAs performance was taped on Sunday night, accepted Best Pop for “Sucker." Best Hip-Hop went to Cardi B’s “Money.”
“Old Town Road (Remix)” by Lil Nas X ft. Billy Ray Cyrus won Song of the Year. "This is my first award ever," said Lil Nas X.
Performers at this year’s VMAs also included Miley Cyrus, Lizzo, Normani, Big Sean and ASAP Ferg, J Balvin and Bad Bunny, Rosalia and Ozuna, and a show-closing set featuring Queen Latifah, Naughty By Nature, Redman, Fetty Wap and Wyclef Jean.
Missy Elliott performed a medley of her hits before she was presented with the Video Vanguard Award by Cardi B. "I never thought that I would be standing up here receiving this award," Elliott said. "I promise you it don’t go unnoticed the support and love you have shown me over the years."
Elliott used her time at the mic to pay tribute to dancers. "When y’all get on the stage with these artists, y’all are not just props, y’all are the icing on the cake, y’all are the beat to the heart," she said, "and so I dedicate this to every dance community out there."
