Shawn Mendes was named Male Artist of 2018 at the E! People’s Choice Awards on Sunday.
The 20-year-old singer beat out fellow Canadian Drake as well as Keith Urban, Ed Sheehan and Bruno Mars for the title. Mendes, who was the People's Choice winner of Breakout Artist in 2016, lost Male Artist last year to Justin Timberlake.
It capped off an award-winning weekend for Mendes, who was in France to pick up the Honor Award at the NRJ Music Awards – where he also performed “Lost in Japan.”
At the People’s Choice Awards in Santa Monica, Nicki Minaj was voted Female Artist of 2018 and winner of Album of 2018 (for Queen).
BTS won Group, Song and Music Video (“Idol”) as well as Social Celebrity of 2018.
Taylor Swift’s Reputation Tour was voted Concert Tour of 2018, Harry Styles won Style Star, and Blake Shelton earned the Country Artist award.
Figure skating duo Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir were voted the Most Hype-Worthy Canadians of 2018.
It was also a big night for made-in-Canada television shows at the People’s Choice Awards: Ontario-shot Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments won both Show and Bingeworthy Show, and its stars Katherine McNamara and Harry Shum Jr. won Female TV Star and Male TV Star respectively.
B.C.-made Riverdale was voted Drama Show of 2018 and Alberta-shot Wynonna Earp won Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show.
The People’s Choice Awards have been handed out since 1975. Last year, NBCUniversal purchased the show from Proctor & Gamble Productions for broadcast on its E! networks around the world. Winners are notified in advance.
