The former lead singer of a Canadian rock band is renewing her attacks on an actress who shares her stage name.
Maria Morales, known as Maria del Mar in the ‘80s-‘90s band National Velvet, said Monday that Maria del Castillo stole the name to benefit her acting career.
“She was well aware that I was making news and had been making credible acclaim to my talent as an actor and singer,” Morales claimed, in an unsolicited email. “When she found out that I had not registered my name as an actor she dove all over it.”
As Maria del Mar, Del Castillo starred in the Canadian series Blue Murder and appeared on shows like Frasier, 24 and Hannibal. She won an ACTRA Award in 2007 for a role on Terminal City.
National Velvet released three studio albums between 1988 and 1995 that spawned singles like “Flesh Under Skin,” “Shine On” and “Sex Gorilla.” According to IMDB.com, Morales (as Maria del Mar) had a handful of acting roles in independent productions between 1988 and 1991.
Morales claims two Maria del Mars vying for acting work in Canada caused confusion.
“I was told by the people working on these productions that they were expecting me and got her instead,” she wrote. “The crew told me that they were disappointed when she posed as Maria del Mar because they were expecting me.
“I know that she did this to get gigs and the fact that she does not admit it makes me like her less.”
Morales first made her beef public in February 2016 in a bizarre rant she posted on del Castillo’s Facebook page.
“This is the original Maria Del Mar the writer, composer, musician, ground blazer Maria Del Mar,” she wrote. “F**K YOU ACTOR THANG I CAN I HAVE MY NAME BACK. YOU OPPERTUNISTIC ACT THOREISH YUKKY ICKKY FAKER.”
Morales added: “YOU TOOK THE JOBS I DID NOT WANT. I THOUGHT THE SCRIPTS SUCKED AND I DON ‘T BACK THINGS I DO NOT BELIEVE IN . THE CREW TOLD ME THEY WERE DISSAPPOINTED WHEN YOUY WALKED IN WITH MY NAME. NAME SAKER FAKER ACTRESS.
“THIS IS MARIA DEL MAR THE ORIGINAL. NOW KINDLY F**K OFF MARIA THE IMPOSTERESSACTRESSESESESE THRRRRRRE . FAKER FAKER BANDWAGON JUMPER.”
Del Castillo responded: “You are kidding yourself if you think you and/or I are the only ones that have the same first name. Pretty silly to think only YOU in all of the Spanish speaking countries have that name. Perhaps spend some time in a Spanish speaking country so you can meet others with the same name.”
Del Castillo eventually blocked Morales on Facebook.
On Monday, Morales suggested she’s actually not bitter.
“I am glad that I never really made it in the s**t world of acting,” she wrote, “and I can honestly say that I would rather rock!!!!!”
She signed off as “Maria Del Mar the original at least here in Toronto, Vancouver Canada they know me from coast to coast.”
Regarding the latest accusations, del Castillo told iHeartRadio.ca: "From one Maria del Mar to another, I wish her the best."
