Yvonne Staples Of The Staple Singers Dies At 80


Yvonne Staples of The Staple Singers died this week in Chicago at the age of 80.

The singer succumbed to colon cancer on April 10, just two weeks after being diagnosed.

As part of the family group, Yvonne performed on ‘70s hits like “Respect Yourself” and “I’ll Take You There.” She later provided backing vocals for her sister Mavis Staples’ solo material.

The Staple Singers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999 and received a lifetime achievement Grammy in 2005. Earlier this year the group was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.

Patriarch Roebuck Staples died in 2000 and Cleotha Staples died in 2013.
