In 2018, 14-year old soccer-star, Jordan had just finished a shift and was sitting on the bench, when a massive, van-sized slab of ice slid down the side of the dome and crushed his spine. He was rushed to SickKids and underwent an 11-hour surgery. He faced a long and challenging battle to recover and still does many hours of physiotherapy a week. Thanks to SickKids, Jordan can walk and is back at school.
Dr. Natasha Collia is a SickKids Emergency Department physician. When we reached out to staff at the hospital to participate in the SickKids Fall campaign film shoot, Natasha raised her hand. She wanted to help in any way she could. Dr. Collia has a personal connection to SickKids as her brother was treated there, and she has always wanted to work for the hospital that has meant so much to her and her family.
Owen is known by those in his community as the look-a-like to the little boy in Jerry McGuire – he has strawberry blonde hair, big glasses and a cute little lisp. What those around him don’t see is how often he is hooked up to a pump for 15 hours at a time, or how he has spent more time in the hospital than out. Owen was diagnosed at just one year old with severe dysmotility, a condition in which the muscles of the digestive system don’t work normally.
Krish was diagnosed with Hirschsprung’s disease which causes motility issues in the bowls. He underwent one of the most complex transplants ever done by SickKids – a 19 hour surgery to transplant six organs - his kidney, pancreas, liver, stomach, and small and large intestines. Today, thanks to SickKids, Krish is thriving.
After suffering from fevers, nausea, vomiting and lethargy, Roux was diagnosed with liver cancer (hepatoblastoma), stage 4, in January 2019. She was placed on a ten-cycle chemotherapy treatment protocol and had surgery to resect the primary tumour on her liver part-way through the protocol, after four cycles of chemo. Shortly after she finished her chemotherapy, routine monitoring scans revealed that her cancer was back. She is undergoing more treatment
