Rainbow crosswalk in Elmvale signifies inclusive community

Downtown Elmvale has a new splash of colour thanks to the installation of a new rainbow pride crosswalk located at the intersection of Queen Street W and Maria Street. This is the first pride crosswalk installed on public property in Springwater and provides a visual message to residents and visitors that Springwater is a welcoming and inclusive community.

At a meeting on August 3, 2022, Springwater Council agreed to partner with the Elmvale District High School (EDHS) Gender & Sexual Diversity Club for the installation of the crosswalk to further promote inclusion and provide support towards the LGBTQ2+ community in Springwater. The club fundraised $1000 for the project and presented a cheque to Springwater Council at a meeting which took place on April 19.

The location of the crosswalk was selected based on a number of criteria including: installation at an established signalized crosswalk, in a well-lit intersection on the highly travelled main street of downtown Elmvale.

“I am incredibly proud of this group of EDHS students who had the vision and who have made the efforts to make this crosswalk a reality. The fact that our youth has led this progressive initiative is in keeping with this generation’s commitment to diversity, equity, and acceptance,” says Elmvale District High School Principal Mark Ruzylo.

“This crosswalk is a way to let residents and visitors to Springwater know that no matter how you identify or who you love, you are safe, valued and welcomed in our community,” says Springwater Mayor Jennifer Coughlin. “ Thank you to the Elmvale District High School Gender and Sexual Diversity Club for stepping up, bringing this important item forward and fundraising to make it happen.”

Springwater Council, members of the EDHS Gender & Sexual Diversity Club, Springwater staff and community members gathered to celebrate the new crosswalk with a ribbon cutting ceremony which took place on Friday, May 12, 2023.
