Unemployment in New Brunswick jumped a full percentage point last month to 7.9 per cent.

Statistics Canada reports the provincial economy had a net gain of 6,600 full-time jobs, which was offset by a net loss of 5,300 part time jobs, as well as a net increase of 5,500 in the labour force.

The largest job gains were seen in New Brunswick's health care and social assistance and wholesale and retail trade sectors, while the educational services sector saw the largest job losses.

Nationally, the unemployment rate remained unchanged in July at a record low of 4.9 per cent.

Statistics Canada says the Canadian economy lost 31,000 jobs last month, but there is no evidence of a rise in the proportion of people leaving or switching jobs.
