Kingston Police warn of new scam targeting international students
The Kingston Police say they have recently received reports of international students being targeted by suspects claiming to be law enforcement from their home countries. They say in some cases of this scam, the scammers pose as representatives from the People's Republic of China.
Police continue to explain the scam saying the suspects often claim that the victim's information has been used to commit fraud and they require proof that they are not part of the criminal enterprise. This may require the victim to share banking information or even make a payment. Additonally. the suspects often claim to be working with the RCMP.
Kingston Police tell people, especially international students to look for the following red flags:
- You are contacted out of the blue.
- You are asked to keep the contact secret, especially when visiting your financial institution.
- You are asked to provide personal information.
- You are told to act immediately, or you will be arrested.
Police say once money has been wired overseas, there is almost no possibility that anyone will be able to recover the funds. If a person that is approached and is in any way suspicious, contact the Kingston Police at 613-549-4660.

A 48-year-old man has been arrested and charged after Brockville Police investigated a break-and-enter at a building on Central Ave. Overnight on September 22nd tools were stolen from the building, the night of September 23rd an arrest was made. -
Impaired driver charged after OPP traffic stop on Hwy. 401
A 66-year-old driver from Anjou, Quebec has been charged after Ontario Provincial Police pulled them over on Highway 401 in the South Stormont Township, after a traffic act violation, the driver was tested and charged with impaired driving. -
Local individual arrested, charged with assault and resisting arrest
A 38-year-old local individual has been arrested and charged after Kingston Police officers responded to an assault that took place in the area of Montreal Street and John Counter Boulevard. The accused resisted arrest, assaulting an officer in the process. -
OPP continues warning the public after individual reported losing over $15K to fraud phone call
The public is being reminded to be cautious of any request for money or information after a resident recently reported to Prince Edward County OPP that they lost over $15,000 to a bank investigator fraud. -

The 16th annual Renfrew County Warden's Golf Tournament took place at the Dragonfly Golf Links. Funds raised from the charity event totaled $4,500 for the 2023 Ontario Winter Games Legacy and the newly created Housing and Homelessness Fund.
