Kalsey Kulyk Celebrates Success Of 'Who I Was'

Canadian country music fans are loving “Who I Was,” the latest single from Kalsey Kulyk’s self-titled debut album.

“It’s my FIRST top 40 ever and I am so extremely grateful and ridiculously excited to have this opportunity,” the singer wrote in a Facebook post earlier this week.

The current iHeartRadio Future Star from Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan – a town of about 1,500 people three hours northeast of Saskatoon – is particularly grateful because the song she wrote with Jeff Trott is deeply personal.

“Throughout my life, I’ve found there have been people who have wanted me to be someone else or have tried to make me something I’m not, and I’ve occasionally gotten caught up in trying to be that other person for them,” Kulyk explained. “But sooner or later I realize that that someone isn’t me, and I always come back to myself.

“I hope this song speaks to anyone out there trying to be someone they’re not. The most beautiful thing about you is that there’s no one else like you. Be that person; that’s what makes you amazing!”

Despite the pandemic, fans may still get to see Kulyk perform “Who I Was” live. When COVID-19 hit, she and husband Eric Ethridge returned to Canada from Nashville and customized a camper van with a stage on its roof. The duo are taking their show on the road and chronicling it all for an upcoming digital series Love On The Road
