Province reports record number of physicians recruited for 2021-22

The provincial government says a record number of doctors were recruited between April 2021 and March 2022 to work in Nova Scotia.

Of the 163 doctors recruited during that period, 75 are family doctors and 88 are specialists.

Government says the previous three years saw recruitment totals of 130, 128 and 127 physicians, respectively.

Overall, there was a net gain of 95 physicians as the province saw 68 departures.

As of May 31st, the province says there were 149 physician vacancies, which include 60 specialty and 89 family medicine doctors.

Nova Scotia Health's monthly report in May showed a record 91,964 Nova Scotians on the Need a Family Practice Registry, an increase of 3,605 from April.

The Northern Zone, which includes Colchester-East Hants as well as Cumberland and Pictou counties, has 20,648 people on the registry.
