OPP: Lifejacket could save your life on the water

As summer kicks into high gear, OPP remind the public about the importance of personal floatation devices, including lifejackets, with a number of preventable deaths already reported on Ontario waters so far in 2020.

Over 80 per cent of boating death result from not wearing a PFD, according to police, including seven of eight fatalities on the water so far this year.

Capsized boats and falling overboard are the leading cause death and OPP said wearing a personal floatation device can help keep you safe in a boat or canoe.

Police added those on the water need to do more than just have their lifejacket or PFD on hand, as they say in a news release the "only safe PFD is the one you are wearing."

OPP summer patrols have already begun and they will continue to be out on the water to keep everyone safe.
