Valley Native Part Of Key Parkinson's Disease Discovery
An Ottawa Valley native has been part of a major discovery in the fight against Parkinson's disease.
Dr. Heidi McBride, who was born and raised in the Westmeath area, is part of a team of Montreal researchers that's demonstrated a link between gut infection and the early stage of the disease. McBride says this is a breakthrough that, indeed, focused on the gut instead of the brain.
"It is a disease of the brain; it's when patients suffer tremors, and they start to freeze", McBride said.
"Most people in research centres have been trying to focus on what kills those neurons in the brain. However, there's been a lot of peripheral information that there can be a major immune component to Parkinson's disease", she added.
The discovery could lead to new hope in the search for effective treatements.
