One person in critical condition after seven-vehicle crash on Highway 416

One person is in critical condition in hospital after a seven-vehicle pileup on Highway 416 near North Grenville Monday evening.

Police said the crash happened around 7:15 p.m. Monday on the 416 northbound near Rideau River Bridge, with one crash causing a chain reaction of crashes.

A 24-year-old man driving one of the cars had got out of his vehicle on the highway, according to police, before he was struck by another car. He was taken to hospital with serious injuries and remains in critical condition at the Ottawa Hospital.

Police said no one else was hurt in the crash and the cause remains under investigation, though, they note temperatures were around the freezing mark at the time of the collisions.

The northbound lanes of the highway were closed for several hours as police investigated but the road re-opened just before 5 a.m. Tuesday.
