Taylor Swift Tops Charts, Sets Records
Taylor Swift’s new album folklore had the biggest first week than any album since… Taylor Swift’s previous album Lover.
folklore, which was released on July 24, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. According to Nielsen Music/MRC Data, the album earned 846,000 equivalent album units (compiled using physical album sales and streams), only slightly less than Lover last year.
It is Swift’s seventh No. 1 album.
She also becomes the first artist ever to have an album and a song ("cardigan") debut at No. 1 in the same week.
With the success of folklore, Swift is tied with Janet Jackson as the female artist with the most No. 1 albums – behind Barbra Streisand and Madonna – and takes the record for the most albums to debut at No. 1. Swift has passed Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Madonna and Britney Spears, who have each had six albums debut at the top of the chart.
According to Billboard, folklore is already the top selling album in the U.S. this year, beating Map of the Soul: 7 by BTS.
