Chaleur Region's National Indigenous Peoples Day celebration goes virtual

news-update

The on-going COVID-19 pandemic didn't stop the Bathurst Youth Centre from celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day.

Off-Reserve Indigenous Outreach Worker Starr Halka-Glazier the annual celebration would typically be held in person at the centre, however because of the pandemic organizers decided on an online format.

Halka-Glazier says the online presentation aims to include activities like teachings, singing and drumming, and Elder addresses that would typically be a part of the in-person while ensuring the health and safety of people.

She hopes the video helps recognize and celebrate the contributions made by Indigenous people so that the teachings get passed on to future generations.

Halka-Glazier also hopes the production will inspire people to 'dig into their roots and rediscover their culture it it has been misplaced.'

National Indigenous Peoples Day was on Sunday.
