Free Christmas Fun in the City!

The holiday season is filled with friends, family and fun! However, it can also be pretty hard on the ‘ol pocketbook! Here are some fun (and FREE) places to celebrate the season in the Lower Mainland this winter!

Christmas at Canada Place:

When: December 6th – January 1, 2020

Where: North Point of Canada Place

Take a super ‘lit’ stroll along the waterfront at the 32nd annual Christmas at Canada Place! Behold the beautiful “Avenue of Trees” and the incredible 15-foot tall “Chrismoose” light sculpture (pictured). Be sure to check out the handcrafted displays at “Woodward Windows”. These same displays were once featured at Woodward’s department store in downtown Vancouver!

Christmas in Kerrisdale:

When: December 7, 14, 21. 12pm - 5pm

Where: The Village of Kerrisdale. Parking: W 42nd Ave. & Yew st.

Spend an afternoon in Kerrisdale this Christmas as the “Christmas in Kerrisdale” festival kicks off this Saturday! Kick it old school with horse & carriage rides, strolling brass bands and Christmas quartets & tubas! Be sure to come out to Kerrisdale Arena on December 15th for a free skate at Kerrisdale’s “Gliding on Ice.”

Robson Skating Rink:

When: Now – February 29th 2020

Where: Robson Square (located near the Vancouver Art Gallery)

There’s nothing that embraces the winter spirit like lacing up a pair of skates, and heading out to a local rink! Ever since the re-opening prior for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, Robson skating rink has been a staple of the winter season in Vancouver! Robson skating rink is free if you bring your own skates. Or you can spend $5 to rent a pair (cash only). There will be live music at Robson Square from December 13th to 24th and donations will be accepted throughout December to support BC Children’s Hospital.

Coquitlam Lights at Lafarge:

When: Now – Jan.19, 2020. Dusk - 11pm

Where: Lafarge Lake, Town Centre Park (1299 Pinetree Way)

Head over to Lafarge Lake for a beautiful light display surrounding the Coquitlam lake! The incredible displays include a woodland garden, outdoor dining table illuminated by a chandelier and a 90-foot caterpillar! There are free activities taking place every day this week, including “Frozen Night” On Saturday, December 7th.

CP Holiday train:

Where: Haney-Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Port Moody, Port Coquitlam.

When: December 16th-17th (Click here for details)

Holiday Train returns this year as the annual CP tradition continues to dazzle crowds across Canada. The Holiday train left Montreal on November 26th and is heading this way! This is no ordinary train as its 14 rail cars and 1000 foot long surface is covered in LED lights! There will also be incredible live performances and festivities at all the listed stops! 

Rocky Point Christmas Lights:

Where: Rocky Point Park, 2800 Murray st. Port Moody

When: Now - TBC

Port Moody lights up this holiday season with a beautiful Christmas light display at Rocky Point Park! Rocky Point is already full of natural beauty and now the waterfront park will have all the ‘festive feels’ to walk through and enjoy!


Dundarave Festival of Lights:

Where: Dundarave Beach, West Vancouver

When: December 7th, 14th and 21st

West Vancouver’s Dundarave beach is the spot for a fun-filled Saturday as there will be three unique holiday themed events held on consecutive Saturdays! On the 7th experience “The Dundarave Nativity”, incredible wooden carvings made of Red Cedar. The Elders of Squamish Nation will bless the festival with paddle songs and traditional dances. On December 14th the theme is “Christmas of the World”, an experience of Christmas from around the globe! Finally, on December 21st it’s “Christmas Wassail & Bonfire Night!”. Be sure to check out the amazing Christmas light displays that will be a staple of all the events!


Shipyards at Lonsdale:

Where: 115 Victory Ship Way

When: December 7-8, 14 -15. Saturday 10am-6pm, Sunday 10am-5pm

Head on over to the Shipyards at Lonsdale for The Annual Shipyards Christmas Market! Visit vendors as they showcase their artisan products and take a stroll through the Christmas lined streets! The Shipyards Skate Plaza is new this year and the covered 12,000 foot venue is sure to be an amazing spot to spend the day! Keep an eye on the website, for details on weather and ice conditions.
