A$AP Rocky was charged with assault Thursday in connection with a fight on a Stockholm street on June 30.
The rapper, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, has been in custody since July 3 and will remain there until a trial, which could be held next week.
In a statement, prosecutor Daniel Suneson said A$AP Rocky and two other men are “suspected of assault causing actual bodily harm, having come to the conclusion that the events in question constitute a crime and despite claims of self-defence and provocation.”
The 30-year-old rap star, who was in Sweden to perform at a music festival, faces up to two years in prison but Suneson said he will not seek the maximum.
Prosecutors said they have video that shows a young man being thrown to the pavement and beaten.
Before he was arrested, A$AP Rocky posted video clips on Instagram that show two young men following he and his entourage around Stockholm. “SO A FEW DRUG ADDICTS ARE NOT MY FANS , WE DONT KNOW THESE GUYS AND WE DIDNT WANT TROUBLE , THEY FOLLOWED US FOR 4 BLOCKS , AND THEY WERE SLAPPING GIRLS BUTTS WHO PASSED , GIVE ME A BREAK,” he captioned the clips. “HITS SECURITY IN FACE WITH HEADPHONES THEN FOLLOW US.”
Last weekend, U.S. president Donald Trump said he spoke to Swedish prime minister Stefan Lofven about A$AP Rocky’s detention. Lofven’s press secretary later said Trump was reminded that Sweden’s government does not interfere with its independent judicial system.
A$AP Rocky was arrested in 2012 for allegedly attacking two people who were taking pictures of him on a New York City street, according to TMZ. In 2013, he was accused of slapping a woman at a music festival in Philadelphia but the case was later dismissed.
