Canadian artists Alessia Cara, The Weeknd and Leonard Cohen were among the early winners at Sunday's 60th annual Grammy Awards, where Bruno Mars and Kendrick Lamar dominated.
In the pre-show, The Weeknd won Best Urban Contemporary Album for Starboy, while Cohen (who died in 2016) earned Best Rock Performance for You Want It Darker.

Early in the televised show, Cara – whose debut album came out in 2015 – was named Best New Artist. She is the first Canadian artist to win in this category.
"I've been pretend-winning Grammys since I was a kid, like in my shower, so you'd think I'd have the speech thing down but I absolutely don't," said Cara, who thanked her parents and brother for their support of her dream, "even when it felt really far-fetched and unrealistic."
Cara also noted there are artists "that don't always get acknowledged because of popularity contests or numbers games" and she encouraged people to "support real music and real artists."
Cara was back later in the show to perform "1-800-273-8255" with Logic and Khalid.
The La La Land soundtrack, which features singing by Canadian actor Ryan Gosling, won the Grammy for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media. Mars' 24k Magic earned a Grammy for Ontario's Charles Moniz in the Best Engineered Album - Non-Classical category.
Other Canadian nominees came up empty.
Michael Bublé's Nobody But Me (Deluxe Version) and Sarah McLachlan's Wonderland, nominated for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album, lost to Tony Bennett Celebrates 90. Justin Bieber's "Despacito" collaboration with Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee lost Best Pop Duo/Group Performance to Portugal. The Man's "Feel It Still."
Montreal's Arcade Fire lost Best Alternative Music Album to The National and Daniel Caesar lost both the Best R&B Album and Best R&B Performance categories to Bruno Mars. Northern Cree lost Best Regional Roots Music Album.
The soundtrack to the Canadian musical Come From Away wasn't able to beat the Dear Evan Hansen soundtrack for Best Musical Theatre Album.
Kendrick Lamar kicked off the televised show, hosted by James Corden, with a fiery performance that featured appearances by U2's Bono and The Edge and comedian Dave Chappelle. Lamar also picked up the first award of the show, for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration (for "Loyalty" ft. Rihanna), and went on to win Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance.
The night belonged to Mars, though, who picked up six Grammys, including Album of the Year and Song of the Year.
Performance highlights on Sunday included "Despacito" by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, "Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken" by Pink, "Finesse" by Bruno Mars ft. Cardi B, and "Wild Thoughts" by DJ Khaled ft. Rihanna and Bryson Tiller. Elton John was joined by Miley Cyrus for a version of "Tiny Dancer."
Kesha was backed by female artists – including Camila Cabello – for an emotional and timely performance of "Praying." Maren Morris, Eric Church and Brothers Osborne did a cover of Eric Clapton's "Tears In Heaven" that was dedicated to music fans who were lost in attacks in Las Vegas and Manchester.
The "In Memoriam" segment included Gord Downie of The Tragically Hip.
