Bebe Rexha said Monday designers are reluctant to make her a Grammy Awards red carpet dress because she’s a size 8.
The pop star said her team approached several designers but “a lot of them do not want to dress me because I’m too big. Literally, I’m too big.”
Rexha, who is nominated for Best New Artist as well as Best Country Duo/Group Performance (for her Florida Georgia Line collaboration “Meant To Be”), said in a video message on Instagram that if a size 6-8 is considered too big, “then I don’t want to wear your f**king dresses.”
She added: “You’re saying that all the women in the world that are size 8 and up are not beautiful and can’t wear your dresses.”
Rexha captioned the post: “If you don’t like my fashion style or my music that’s one thing. But don’t say you can’t dress someone that isn’t a runway size. Empower women to love their bodies instead of making girls and women feel less [than] by their size. We are beautiful any size! Small or large!”
Supermodel Tyra Banks, who met Rexha at the iHeartRadio MMVAs last summer, is among those showing support for Rexha.
“The day I met you in Toronto, I knew U were extra special,” she tweeted. “Your impromptu posing lesson backstage was MAJOR. You stuck that leg & hip out & Tooched & Smized at the same time. Those designers that don’t wanna dress U are DUMB. U my dear @BebeRexha are pure genius…H2T – head to toe!”
Singer Leona Lewis tweeted: “Even a size 4/6 is too big for most ‘designers.’ It’s bloody outrageous & damaging to women’s body image! F them #LOVEYOURBODY.”
Mayim Bialik of The Big Bang Theory recommended Rexha connect with stylist Adena Rohatiner.
“Yup. @adenarohatiner has no problem dressing my size 8 ass,” she tweeted. “I’m sure she’d love to hear from you. Sending you a size 8 hug.
The singer even got advice from entertainer Manila Luzon, who knows a thing or two about dressing to impress. “Learn from a drag queen, gurrl. There are hundreds of unknown designers who can custom design you a dress fit specifically to your body,” she tweeted.
“You don't have to buy into designer labels just because you wanna feel rich when you could be supporting up and coming designers.”
No doubt, some designers are going to step up in the wake of Rexha’s rant. Either way, she wants to make one thing clear.
“My size 8 ass is still going to the Grammys.”
