Brian Wilson announced Tuesday he is scrapping his May concert dates so he can undergo back surgery.

“As some of you might know I have been having some issues with my back that has very recently gotten worse,” Wilson explained in a message to fans. “It runs in my family, Carl had back problems as well. My doctors have told me that I need to have back surgery immediately. They are optimistic that this will finally relieve the pain.”

Promising the cancelled shows will be rescheduled, the 75-year-old Beach Boys icon said he was “very sorry for any inconvenience this may cause to everyone who was coming out to see us.”

There are no Canadian shows scheduled for May. Wilson is set to perform on July 15 in Colwood, B.C.

Beach Boys co-founder Mike Love – and Wilson’s cousin – offered his support in a Facebook message alongside a photo of he and Wilson playing basketball.

“I know what it's like to have the (Wilson) back gene," he shared. ”I am sympathetic and empathetic, as I myself have had back problems as early as junior high.

“Feel better soon Brian.”
