After more than a month in hospital battling COVID-19, Canadian actor-singer Nick Cordero could be starting his long, long road to recovery.
“The doctor just called and said that Nick is showing very, very, very early, early, early stages of tracking,” his wife Amanda Kloots said in an Instagram Story on Wednesday afternoon.
Cordero, 41, is in a medically-induced coma at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was admitted in early April with symptoms of COVID-19 and has battled a number of complications, including a clot that required the amputation of his right leg.
Kloots said nurses reported seeing Cordero’s eyes opening. “These are early, early, early signs and super, super small movements,” she explained.
“The doctor just really thinks this is a great sign that he is starting to wake up.”
Cordero is a native of Hamilton, Ont. who attended Toronto's Ryerson University prirot to joining rock-soul band LoveMethod. He starred in Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding in Toronto and worked in shows onboard cruise ships before finding work on the stages of New York City. Cordero starred in Rock of Ages on Broadway as well as Waitress and A Bronx Tale. He earned a Tony Award nomination in 2014 for playing Cheech in Bullets Over Broadway.
Kloots, whose son with Cordero celebrates his first birthday next month, said Wednesday’s news provides “a little bit of relief” and shows “that there’s some hope.”
A GoFund campaign to help the family has to date raised over $496,000 U.S.
Kloots suggested Mother’s Day this Sunday is a good reason for Cordero to come out of the coma. “Maybe he will wake up for me and his mom,” she said. (His mother Lesley Cordero is a retired school teacher and artist in Hamilton.) “What a gift.”
