A Carpool Karaoke featuring Paul McCartney, a show by Bruce Springsteen and a controversial documentary about Michael Jackson were among the winners of Creative Arts Emmys this weekend.
McCartney’s edition of Carpool Karaoke with James Corden won best variety special (pre-recorded) and the Late Late Show Carpool Karaoke Primetime Special earned an award for technical direction, camerawork and video control. Carpool Karaoke: The Series won the Emmy for short form variety series.
Springsteen on Broadway’s Thom Zimny took home the award for directing a variety special.
Leaving Neverland, which chronicled allegations of sexual abuse by the King of Pop, was named best documentary of nonfiction special. (In a statement, Jackson estate said: “For a film that is a complete fiction to be honoured in a nonfiction Emmy category is a complete farce.”)
The televised adaptation of the musical Rent picked up awards for lighting design/direction and production design and Aretha! A Grammy Celebration for the Queen of Soul earned one for sound mixing.
An Emmy for original music and lyrics went to Adam Schlesinger, Rachel Bloom and Jack Dolgen for “Antidepressants Are So Not a Big Deal” from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
Music composition honours went to Free Solo, Game of Thrones and Chernobyl. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel got the Emmy for outstanding music supervision and Fosse/Verdon won for music direction.
Succession was named the winner of outstanding original main title theme music.
