Canadians did a lot of music-related online searches in 2018, according to Google’s list of the year’s top trending searches.
Three of the top 10 overall searches were music artists – Mac Miller (No. 6), Avicii (No. 9), and Demi Lovato (No. 10). Miller died in September, Avicii died in April and Lovato had a near-fatal overdose in July.
Among all music-related searches, Lovato was No. 1, followed by Freddie Mercury, Cardi B, 6ix9ine, Travis Scott, Hedley, Childish Gambino, Machine Gun Kelly, Rick Ross and Quebec singer Hubert Lenoir.
Lovato also topped the list of searches for people – and is the only music artist in the Top 10.
As for celebrity deaths, Miller was the third most-searched by Canadians followed by Avicii (No. 4), XXXTentacion (No. 7) and Aretha Franklin (No. 8).
Of the top 10 “How” questions Canadians entered into Google, “How old is Dolly Parton?” was No. 2 and “How old is Justin Timberlake?” Ranked No. 7. “Why is 6ix9ine going to jail?” was the second most-asked “Why” question of the year and “Why was Meek Mill in prison?” was No. 6.
