Demi Lovato’s mother said the pop star is getting healthy in the wake of a drug overdose in July.
“I can honestly say today that she’s doing really well,” Dianna de la Garza told conservative outlet Newsmax TV. “She’s happy. She’s healthy. She’s working on her sobriety, and she’s getting the help she needs.
“And that in itself encourages me about her future.”
Lovato, 25, was taken to hospital July 24 after being found unconscious in her Hollywood Hills home.
Her mom and sisters rushed to be at her side after getting the news.
“She didn’t look good at all. She was in bad shape,” said de la Garza. “But I said to her, ‘Demi, I’m here. I love you.’ And at that point she said back to me, ‘I love you, too.’ So from that point on, I never allowed myself to think things weren’t going to be okay.”
Still, Lovato was in critical condition and could have taken a turn for the worse. “We just didn’t know for two days if she was going to make it or not,” she admitted.
De la Garza said she has spent a lot of time since her daughter’s overdose learning about opioid addiction. “The opioid crisis in America is at epidemic levels,” she said. “Opioids are killing our kids.”
