The man who broke into Eminem’s home earlier this year allegedly admitted he was there to kill the rap star.
Matthew David Hughes, who is facing five years behind bars on charges of first-degree home invasion and malicious destruction of property, appeared in Macomb County District Court on Wednesday.
According to the Detroit Free Press, Clinton Township Police officers Adam Hackstock and Dan Quinn testified about what happened in the early morning hours of April 5 at Eminem’s Detroit-area mansion.
Security camera footage shows Hughes was on the property for “quite some time,” Quinn told the court, before he used a brick to smash a window and climbed through.
Eminem – whose real name is Marshall Mathers – woke up to find a man standing behind him.
“When Mr. Mathers asked him why he was there, he was told by Mr. Hughes that he was there to kill him,” Hackstock testified. The rapper escorted the intruder, who was not armed, out of his house.
Hackstock said he arrived on scene to find a security guard for Eminem’s gated community wrestling with Hughes on the ground.
Hughes has been in custody on a $50,000 cash bond since his arrest. His lawyer Richard Glanda said Hughes is homeless and suffers “some sort of mental issues.”
Judge Jacob Michael Femminineo Jr. ruled there is probable cause to move forward with a trial. Hughes is scheduled to be arraigned on Sept. 28.
Eminem was not in the courtroom on Wednesday.
