Former Kasabian frontman Tom Meighan was sentenced Tuesday to 200 hours of community service after he pleaded guilty to assaulting former fiancée Vikki Ager.
The 39-year-old singer appeared in Leicester Magistrates Court in England one day after his departure from the band was announced.
“Tom Meighan is stepping down from Kasabian by mutual consent,” read a tweet from Kasabian. “Tom has struggled with personal issues that have affected his behaviour for quite some time and now wants to concentrate all his energies on getting his life back on track. We will not be commenting further.”
Meighan followed up with a tweet of his own. “I just wanted to let you all know that I am doing well. I’m in a really good place now. Thanks for all your love and support. I’ll be seeing you all very soon.”
In court on Tuesday, a prosecutor said Meighan smelled “heavily of intoxicants” when he assaulted Ager on April 9. A minor who witnessed the incident called police, who described Meighan as “visibly upset … uncooperative and aggressive.”
Ager suffered minor injuries to her knees, feet, an elbow and her neck.
Meighan’s lawyer apologized on his behalf and assured the court “he has sought to address his offending behaviour.” In addition to the 200 hours of unpaid work, Meighan was ordered to pay about $300 in fees.
Meighan formed Kasabian in 1997 with Serge Pizzorno, Chris Edwards and Chris Karloff. They have released six studio albums since 2004, including five that topped the UK chart.
