Kidd Creole, a founding member of Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, was sentenced Wednesday to 16 years in prison for fatally stabbing a man in 2017.
The 62-year-old, whose real name is Nathaniel Glover, was found guilty of manslaughter last month.
Glover stabbed John Jolly, 55, twice in the chest with a steak knife on a Manhattan street and then fled the scene.
Jolly died in hospital and Glover was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
He told police he thought Jolly – who approached him and said “What’s up?” – was gay and was making an advance. “I was thinking that he was thinking I was gay,” Glover said. “So I was a little annoyed by that.”
Police said Glover, who was inducted with Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, was working as a maintenance man and security guard at the time of his arrest.
The group had hits in the early 1980s like “White Lines (Don’t Do It)” and “The Message” but split up after a few years in the spotlight.
