When “Watermelon Sugar” topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart earlier this month, it made Harry Styles a member of a special club at home in the UK.
Styles is now one of only five British artists in the last 25 years to go to No. 1 in the U.S. with a song that didn’t go to No. 1 at home.
The 26-year-old singer is in the company of Adele, whose 2012 tracks “Set Fire To The Rain” and “Rolling In The Deep” topped the U.S. chart but peaked at No. 11 and No. 2 respectively in the UK.
The other British artists in the club are Charli XCX, who is featured on Iggy Azalea’s 2014 hit “Fancy,” which only made it to No. 5 in the UK; Jay Sean, whose “Down” ft. Lil Wayne was No. 1 in the U.S. in 2009 but only No. 3 in the UK; and Seal, whose 1995 ballad “Kiss From A Rose” topped the U.S. chart but only made it to No. 3 in the UK.
“Watermelon Sugar,” which Styles debuted last November, spent 19 weeks on the Hot 100 before taking the top spot for the week that ended Aug. 6 thanks to a campaign on National Watermelon Day. It is the singer’s first No. 1 hit in the U.S. but peaked at No. 4 in the UK.
