Shawn Mendes’ new track “If I Can’t Have You” is officially his biggest hit ever.
Released earlier this month, it debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 —exactly 41 years after Yvonne Elliman’s song of the same name topped the chart – and became Mendes’ fourth Top 10 hit. It's also No. 2 on the Canadian chart.
Whether "If I Can't Have You" manages to bump Lil Nas X's “Old Town Road” ft. Billy Ray Cyrus from the No. 1 spot or not, it has bested Mendes' "Stitches,” which went to No. 4 in October 2015.
Some fans may find it hard to believe that the Canadian pop star has never had a No. 1 hit in the U.S.
Both 2016’s “Treat You Better” and 2017’s “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” peaked at No. 6.

The ubiquitous lead single “In My Blood” from Mendes’ self-titled third album failed to crack the Top 10 (it peaked at No. 11) and its follow-up “Lost in Japan” managed to only get to No. 48 (despite a remix by Zedd).
“Life of the Party” peaked at No. 24, “Something Big” at No. 80 and “Mercy” at No. 15 and his collaborations haven’t fared much better: 2015’s “I Know What You Did Last Summer” with Camila Cabello made it to No. 20 and last year’s “Youth” featuring Khalid stalled at No. 65.
