Kelly Clarkson was sued Tuesday by her management company, which claims it is owed commissions on her earnings from her daytime talk show and The Voice.
Starstruck Management Group filed the lawsuit Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court seeking $1.4 million (all figures U.S.). The company, which has repped Clarkson for 13 years, is operated by Narvel Blackstock, father of her estranged husband Brandon Blackstock.
“Over the course of approximately 13 years, Starstruck developed Clarkson into a mega superstar,” reads the filing, according to Variety. “By way of example only, Starstruck was instrumental in helping Clarkson achieve success in terms of numerous hit albums, multiple Grammy wins and nominations, her role on popular television shows like The Voice and her own talk show.
“Despite Starstruck’s hard work and dedication, Clarkson has decided she is going to stop paying Starstruck for what is contractually owed.”
The company says it has a verbal agreement with Clarkson for 15 percent of her gross earnings. Alleging breach of oral contract, Starstruck claims it has received $1.9 million from Clarkson this year but is owed another $1.4 million and will, by the end of the year, be owed another $5.4 million.
Clarkson filed for divorce from Brandon Blackstock in June after nearly seven years. The couple has two children. Last month, Clarkson admitted: “I mean, it’s no secret my life has been a little bit of a dumpster. Personally, it’s been a little hard.”
