Rapper Kodak Black was sentenced Wednesday to 46 months behind bars after he pleaded guilty to weapons charges.
The 22-year-old, who was born Dieuson Octave but changed it to Bill Kapri, was facing up to 10 years in U.S. federal prison.
“It’s time for us to give some tough love in this case,” assistant U.S. attorney Bruce Brown said, according to the Associated Press. “I just don’t see how and when he’s taken these things seriously.”
Black has been in custody since he was arrested in May at the Rolling Loud festival in Miami following an investigation by U.S. Marshals, the ATF and Miami-Dade Police’s gang unit.
In August, he admitted he falsified information on forms so he could buy firearms from a Florida gun shop. One of the weapons was found at the scene of a shooting in Black’s native Pompano Beach, Florida in March – but he has not been charged in that case.
“I have made some decisions I’m not proud of making,” Black said in court. “I do take full responsibility.”
The rapper is no stranger to the criminal justice system. In April he was charged with possession of a weapon and possession of marijuana when he crossed into the U.S. from Canada.
He was arrested in January 2018 after live-streaming himself passing weed and a gun around a young child. Black was sentenced to 364 days in prison with credit for time served.
In 2017, Black was indicted in South Carolina for first degree criminal sexual misconduct after a teenage girl alleged she was assaulted at a hotel following his concert. The case is pending.
Black’s long history of criminal charges includes robbery, battery, false imprisonment, possession of marijuana, possession of a weapon and fleeing law enforcement.
