Canadian singer-songwriter Damhnait Doyle is back doing her own thing on Liquor Store Flowers.
“It’s been a minute since I’ve released solo material,” tweeted Doyle, who recorded albums as one-third of Shaye in 2003 and 2007 and as a member of The Heartbroken in 2010 and 2016.
Last week, Doyle shared a taste of her forthcoming album with “That’s What You Get.” Co-written with Emily Reid and Robyn Dell’Unto, the song is described as being about “putting someone’s else’s needs and wants before your own, until it dawns on you that when you don’t look out for yourself, you are disposable.”
Doyle tweeted that she was "beyond excited" to share the single.
Born in Labrador City, Doyle’s distinctive voice debuted on the music scene in 1996 with Shadows Wake Me, which earned her Juno and East Coast Music Award (ECMA) nominations.
She established herself with her 2000 follow-up, Hyperdramatic, which included the single “Tattooed” and earned her an ECMA as Female Artist of the Year.
The albums Davnet and Lights Down Low followed.
Doyle teamed up with Kim Stockwood and Tara MacLean to form Shaye, which scored a hit with “”Happy Baby” and earned Juno and ECMA noms. The trio also starred in a reality TV series.
When Shaye disbanded, Doyle formed The Heartbroken with Blake Manning, Stuart Cameron, and Peter Fusco.
Stockwood and Cameron are among those contributing to Liquor Store Flowers, which also features the talents of Serena Ryder, Luke Doucet, Miranda Mulholland, Gordie Sampson and Carolyn Dawn Johnson. Doyle co-produced the record with John Dinsmore.
Liquor Store Flowers comes out April 12. Listen to “That’s What You Get” below:
