Country star Hunter Hayes appears to channel Shawn Mendes’ hit “In My Blood” with his new single “Dear God.”
“The song’s description of the nights when I question my world couldn’t be more vulnerable,” Hayes explained, in a release. “We all face the question of being good enough for the world around us and sometimes we just need a reminder that we are.”
Hayes, 26, co-wrote the track with Andy Grammar and Dave Spencer.
“You made me this / Can we share the blame for this?,” sings Hayes. “"Why does my life have to hurt so much? / Why can't I find any piece of love? / And why do I feel like I'm not enough? /Dear God, are you sure that you don't mess up?”
Hayes said that last line struck a chord with him. “I ask that all the time and I don't think I’m the only one,” he shared. “It’s a valid question and one I truly believe you don’t ask unless you already know that answer because the opposite would be entirely too scary to live with.”
“Dear God” is sure to resonate with some people the same way Hayes’ 2014 song “Invisible” did. In it, he sang: “These labels that they give you / Just 'cause they don't understand / If you look past this moment / You'll see you've got a friend / Waving a flag for who you are."
The new song will be included on Hayes’ forthcoming album, his first since 2015’s The 21 Project. Listen to it below:
