Logan Staats woke up Thursday morning with the No. 1 song in Canada.
“The Lucky Ones” topped the iTunes chart only hours after its release, following Wednesday night’s debut of The Launch on CTV. The track is also streaming everywhere and is in rotation on all iHeartRadio platforms.
Staats was chosen by superstar Shania Twain, producer/songwriter busbee and music mogul Scott Borchetta as the first artist to record a new, original song.
“He's so commanding…he's a little bit mysterious,” said Twain. “Makes you want to know him more…being captivated like that is what an audience needs...to cut through the noise.”
It was a life-changing moment for the singer from Ohsweken, Ont. — a village on the Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation Indian reserve who grew up in nearby Brantford, Ont.
“To work with these incredibly gifted mentors and to learn from them is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for which I'm so incredibly grateful,” said Staats. “To be given the amazing chance to breathe life into the beautiful words and melody that is ‘The Lucky Ones”' is an unbelievable honour that just feels so right and so natural.
Staats, who started singing in his teens, has paid his dues by performing for years in bars and other venues as well as sharing stages with the likes of Buffy Sainte-Marie and Mumford and Sons.
The Launch focuses on the key to music success: a great song. Borchetta said pairing that song with an artist like Staats “creates a perfect storm.” He described Staats’ voice as “haunting, powerful.”
The premiere episode of the exciting new music series also featured Edmonton-born folk artist Havelin; indie-pop artist Julia Tomlinson from King City, Ont.; Toronto-based, five-member pop music act The Revel Boys; singer, songwriter, dancer, actress, and model Vivian Hicks.
The Jan. 17 episode features OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder and country singer Jennifer Nettles as mentors. Vying for the chance to release a single are Basil Phoenix, Divine Lightbody, Elijah Woods x Jamie Fine, JP Maurice and LITEYEARS.
