Lorde says her third studio album – and first since 2017’s Melodrama – has a title inspired by her voyage to Antarctica last year.
“I actually decided on the album name right around that trip,” the 24-year-old singer told Newshub in her native New Zealand.
“Just coming back from that trip I thought, this is what it is.”
Lorde did not share the name of her new album, which is expected next year.
“Antarctica really acted as this great white palette cleanser, a sort of celestial foyer I had to move through in order to start making the next thing,” Lorde told fans last month. “In the plane coming down to land, I had this very intense bolt-of-lightning thought, which in all its eloquence was literally ‘DON’T MAKE S**T RECORDS.’”

Lorde’s Antarctica trip also inspired a book, Going South, featuring more than 100 pages of photos and essays. Available for pre-order, the book is scheduled to ship in February.
“It's such an alien environment and it's so dazzling, straight away,” she told Newshub. “I had this very distinct moment of thinking, 'this is the coolest your life will ever get, like, this is it.’”
