Canada's Shawn Mendes won his first ever American Music Award on Sunday night in Los Angeles.
The 19-year-old beat Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars – both of whom he credited with inspiring him to become a singer – in the Favourite Adult Contemporary Artist category.
Mendes, who performed "Nothing Holding Me Back" earlier in the show, was nominated at last year's AMAs for Best New Artist but lost to Zayn.
This year, it was another former One Direction member who took home Best New Artist: Niall Horan.
Mendes' fellow Canadian Drake was named Favourite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist but was not at Sunday's show to accept. It was his fifth AMA win from more than two dozen nominations. Justin Bieber's voice is featured on two AMA-winning tracks: DJ Khaled's "I'm The One" and "Despacito."
And, Keith Urban's "Blue Ain't Your Colour," co-written with Canada's Steven Lee Olsen, earned the Favourite Country Song award. (Urban took home two other AMAs.)

Scream Queens star Lea Michele introduced Nick Jonas performing “Find You” in a circle of female dancers.
Ciara presented the next award of the night for Favourite Rap/Hip-Hop song, which earned DJ Khaled a win for “I’m The One” featuring Justin Bieber. The Chainsmokers picked up the AMA for Favourite EDM.
Favourite Artist Alternative Rock went to Linkin Park, whose members dedicated the award to the late frontman Chester Bennington for "his talent, his sense of humour, and his joy."
Lady Gaga, on stage in Washington, was named Favourite Female Pop/Rock Artist. She graciously thanked fans and urged them to "fight like hell for what you believe in." Bruno Mars delivered his acceptance speech for Favourite Male Artist award from the back of a van.
Selena Gomez performed her hit with marshmello, “Wolves” and P!nk thrilled with a performance on the side of the JW Marriott hotel. Other performances included Macklemore doing "Glorious," Canada's Alessia Cara singing "Stay" with Zedd on piano, and K-Pop sensation BTS.
