The Irish singer who infamously ripped up a photo of the Pope on Saturday Night Live in 1992, announced Thursday she has converted to Islam.
Magda Davitt, formerly known as Sinead O’Connor, tweeted: “This is to announce that I am proud to have become a Muslim … I will be given (another) new name. It will be Shuhada’. (O'Connor said she legally changed her name to Magda Davitt last year to be "free of parental curses.")
The artist best known for her 1990 cover of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U,” later thanked her “Muslim brothers and sisters” for their support. “You can’t begin to imagine how much your tenderness means to me.”

In August 2017, O’Connor begged for help in a heart-wrenching video she recorded in a motel room in New Jersey.
“I’ve walked this earth alone for two years now as punishment for being mentally f**king ill and being angry that nobody would f**king take care of me,” she said.
“I’m all by myself … My entire life is revolving around just not dying.”
