Billie Eilish has shared the short film that was set to play at her Where Do We Go? World Tour shows this year.
Not My Responsibility premiered at the March 9th tour opener in Miami and was shown at two more shows before the tour was scrapped due to COVID-19.
It shows Eilish peeling off her clothing and descending into dark liquid while delivering a voiceover about sexism and body shaming.
“Some people hate what I wear, some people praise it, some people use it to shame others, some people use it to shame me — but I feel you watching,” the singer says.
“Always, and nothing I do goes unseen, so while I feel your stares, your disapproval or your sigh of relief, if I lived by them, I’d never be able to move.”
Eilish continues: “Would you like me to be smaller? Weaker? Softer? Taller? Would you like me to be quiet? Do my shoulders provoke you? Does my chest? Am I my stomach? My hips?
“The body I was born with – is it not what you wanted?”
Earlier this year, Eilish opened up to Vogue about her own image of her body when she was younger. “I was chubby and short,” she recalled. “I developed really early. I had boobs at nine. I got my period at 11. So my body was going faster than my brain.”
Eilish said she hated her body. “I would have done anything to be in a different one. It’s funny, because when you’re a little kid, you don’t think of your body at all. And all of a sudden, you look down and you’re, like, whoa. What can I do to make this go away?”
In the short film, Eilish says: “If I wear what is comfortable, I am not a woman. If I shed the layers, I’m a slut. Though you’ve never seen my body, you still judge it. And judge me for it. Why?
“We make assumptions about people based on their size. We decide who they are. We decide what they’re worth. If I wear more, if I wear less, who decides what that makes me? What that means? Is my value based only on your perception? Or is your opinion of me not my responsibility?”
