Shakira and Jennifer Lopez brought slick choreography, glittery barely-there costumes, fireworks, a stripper pole – and a bit of lip-syncing – to Super Bowl LIV on Sunday night.
With previous halftime show performers like Beyoncé, Jay-Z and Paul McCartney looking on, Shakira kicked things off with her 2009 hit “She Wolf” and followed it with 2014’s “Empire,” backed by electric guitars and a string section, and then 2001’s “Whenever, Wherever.”
Bad Bunny then hopped on stage to join Shakira for a bit of his 2018 collaboration with Cardi B (who was in the crowd) and J Balvin, “I Like It” and took the place of Maluma for 2016’s “Chantaje.”
Shakira, who celebrated her 43rd birthday on Sunday, closed her set with her 2005 smash “Hips Don’t Lie.”
Lopez took over with her 2002 hit “Jenny from the Block” followed by 2005’s “Get Right.” After a quick costume change, she showed off her Hustlers moves for 1999’s “Waiting for Tonight.”
J Balvin joined J-Lo on 2000’s “Love Don’t Cost a Thing.” She then morphed into her 2011 hit “On the Floor.”
Emme Muñiz, the nearly 12-year-old daughter of Lopez and singer Marc Anthony, sang a slowed-down “Let’s Get Loud” before Shakira and J-Lo teamed up for the 2000 anthem.
The spectacular halftime show also featured thousands of fans at Hard Rock Stadium wearing LED bracelets made from recycled plastic synchronized to the music – a product of Montreal’s PixMob.
Shakira and Lopez are the first Latina artists to do the halftime show since Christina Aguilera and Gloria Estefan in 2000 and 1999 respectively.
At a press conference last week, Lopez shared: “It’s a very important moment for our community, for the Latino community in this country. When I think of my daughter, when I think of all the little girls in the world, to be able to have that, to see that two Latinas are doing this in this country at this time, it's just very empowering for us."
Lady Gaga, who headlined in 2017, took to Twitter to declare the duo "so incredible!!!" She added: "What a fun halftime show I danced and smiled the whole time. Such powerful sexy women!!!! On camera and off!!!!! Love you beautiful sexy talented women."
Country star Keith Urban tweeted: "ALRIGHT!!!!!! now THAT was a GLOBAL Super Bowl halftime performance!!!!!! STUNNING- WE LOOOOOOOOVED IT!"
