Madonna on Wednesday unveiled the video for her new single “Medellín” with 25-year-old Colombian artist Maluma.
Directed by Diana Kunst and Mau Morgó, the video opens with a whispered monologue. “From now on, I’m Madama X,” she declares. “And Madame X loves to dance. Because you can’t hit a moving target.”
During a live Q&A in London on Wednesday, Madonna said she wanted the video to “look like a painting.”
“Medellín” is the lead single from Madonna’s 14th studio album Madame X, which comes out on June 14.
Reviews of the song have been decidedly mixed. Chuck Arnold of the New York Post called it “bafflingly bad” and “one of the worst singles in a career filled with so many memorable ones.”
Jillian Mapes of Pitchfork opined that “the echo and Auto-Tune on her vocals is a bit much” but described the track as “sexy, stylish.”
Variety’s Jem Aswad said “Medellín” is “a sultry and promising introduction to Madonna’s latest era.”
