Sam Smith just wants someone to die for.
“I long for you / Just a touch of your hand,” they sing on the track “To Die For,” which dropped overnight. “You don't leave my mind / Lonely days / I'm feeling like a fool for dreaming.”
Smith’s anthem samples Jake Gyllenhaal and Katharine Ross from the 2001 film Donnie Darko.
“Releasing this song is going to be a wild one — I feel like it's from the deepest parts of me,” they said, in a release. “I wrote this with Jimmy Napes and Stargate in L.A. during a time of self-discovery and heartbreak. This is for all the lonely hearts out there on another Valentine's Day.”
(“To Die For” was also released at the same time as Billie Eilish’s Bond theme “No Time To Die.”)
On Instagram, Smith told fans that their third album To Die For will be out May 1.
“I am more proud of this album than anything I’ve ever done,” wrote the singer, who adopted gender neutral pronouns last year. “I’ve really set myself free the last two years whilst writing this and I hope you can dance and relate to these stories.”
