Shawn Mendes has given fans another taste of his forthcoming album Wonder with a performance of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” a song originally recorded 31 years before he was born.
The 22-year-old Canadian singer covered the Frankie Valli classic during an appearance on BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge. He also performed the album’s title track.
“Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” was written by Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio – the latter a member of Valli’s group the Four Seasons. The song debuted on Windsor, Ont. radio station CKLW in 1967 (now iHeartRadio's AM800) and went on to reach the No. 2 spot on the Billboard Hot 100.
Mendes is the latest on a long list of artists who have covered the song, including Lauryn Hill, whose version was nominated for a Grammy in 1999.
“Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” is the third track on a setlist that shows up in a teaser trailer for Wonder that Mendes shared in September. The album is set to drop Dec. 4.
